Why Eat Seasonally? Plus Summertime Smoothie Recipe

Eating seasonally is very good for you, as we’ve read about before, here. While Springtime was about cleansing from the stagnant Winter months, Summertime is about stimulating energies outward and getting the body ready for the nutrient absorption process that will happen in the fall by eating foods that stimulate those processes.

By eating seasonally, you are eating foods that have their correct levels of nutrients, phytochemicals (antioxidants), minerals and enzymes. It also supports local farmers and cuts down on pollution from shipping products across the world.

Parts of the body that are focused on keeping at optimal health during the summer are the small intestine (absorption), and the circulatory system.

Conditions to overcome in the Summer through nutrition:

  • Overheating
  • Hot spots
  • Allergies
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy

Seasonal Highlight: Beets

Summertime Double Duty Smoothie Recipe:

The most hydrating smoothie EVAAAAA.

    3 inches of Cucumber

    1 Nettle pill, opened

    1 Beet, peeled (do not do this if you have a white dog… or he’ll be red for weeks)

    ¼ Cup Blueberries

    1.5 Cup Watermelon

    1 Handful Basil

    1 Handful Arugula

    1 Large Organic Carrot

    12 oz Coconut water

    4 Sprigs Mint

    2 Tablespoons Coconut oil

    ½ Frozen Banana

Your favorite switch-out-ables. Today mine are:

1 tablespoon Turmeric + black pepper

½ teaspoon Spirulina

¼ teaspoon Phytoplankton

Blend up well in your Vitamix or other great blender, pour some for the pups (about half a cup) and give the rest to yourself!
